The city of Kaohsiung 高雄 has another special name called Takao.
It was originally the dwelling place of the Makatto tribe of the Plains aborigines.
To curb the intrusion of pirates, the tribesmen planted bamboo all around their homes as defence. In the dialect of the Makattos, "Takau" means bamboo plantation, and this term in the Han Chinese language sounds like Takao.
This is the origin of the name Takao for Kaoshsiung.
